02-22-2016 HCSC MinutesMINUTES OF THE HEALTHY HILLS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING February 22, 2016 Chino Hills Community Center, Banquet A and B 14250 Peyton Drive, Chino Hills CALL TO ORDER Chair Moran called the Healthy Hills Steering Committee Meeting of the City of Chino Hills to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Chair Moran requested the Secretary to call roll. PRESENTATIONS Lieutenant Dave Phelps, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department presented on Active Shooters. He distributed a flyer, which give more information on how to handle a situation if you are in a active shooting circumstances. In addition, he provided a short video of an active shooting incidents. PUBLIC COMMENTS: No comments. ACTION ITEMS MINUTES On motions by Kurt Allan, seconded by Lieutenant Phelps, the Healthy Hills Steering Committee approved the minutes for the February 22, 2016 meeting. MOTION CARRIED. AULT, LARSON, AND POWDERLY ABSENT. On motions by Laura Montague, seconded by Bill Taylor, the Healthy Hills Steering Committee approved the report for the November 16, 2015. MOTION CARRIED. AULT, LARSON, AND POWDERLY ABSENT. DISCUSSION ITEMS SPECIAL EVENTS 1. Jessica Gandara reported on the Strategic Planning meeting on January 27. Gandara distributed a chart of endorsed programs that the Healthy Hills Committee would like to focus on. Committee members gave suggestions on titles of the focus areas and programs classifications. Gandara mentioned an online survey would be distributed out for final voting. 2. Gandara announced the City is now selling pens, mugs, tumblers, and stickers with the City logo on them. She mentioned the Community Center and the Government Center Office would be selling these items. 3. Gandara informed the committee members Easter Egg-Citement event will be on March 26, 2016. Gandara asked if any committee members wish to sign- up for the Healthy Hills booth outreach to her or Kelly Witte. 4. Breann DeSantiago reported on Tobacco Advocacy Collaboration with the Reach Out Program. DeSantiago introduced Ebony Miles Youth Policy Coordinator for the Reach Out program. Miles stated this program is funded through the Tobacco Use and Prevention Education grant. Miles mentioned she coordinated a Chalk Walk at Buena Vista High School, Chino High HEALTHY HILLS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING February 22, 2016 Page 3 School, and Ayala High School. Miles gave a brief overview of the Chalk Walk event. Gandara mentioned DeSantiago is working on updated the Cities smoking ordinance to include electronic and vapor cigarettes. Gandara stated this update would be going to council soon. 5. Gandara mentioned the transition from Healthy Cities Steering Committee to Healthy Hills Steering Committee. She stated she spoke to the City Manager and was give the ok to proceed the transition. PROGRAM REPORTS 1. Gandara reported Mobile Recreation and the Team California for Healthy After Schools are working together to implement healthy behaviors. Gandara stated the program is now offering healthier snacks options. She mentioned the participants are enjoying the modifications to the program. 2. Kelly Witte reported on Adopt a Family program that was held on December 2, 2015. She stated 25 families were accepted into the program and were adopted by 31 local residents, service groups and businesses. 3. Witte reported on Hiking in the Hills program starting March 12 — April 23. She mentioned this program would do various hikes throughout Chino Hills. Witte stated the participants receive a backpack with snacks, water, and other City promotional items. This program is only offered in the fall and spring. Gandara mentioned if the Healthy Hills Committee would like to branch off on Hiking in the Hills and incorporate Hiking with the community on every first day of the New Year. She also mentioned hiking with the community every first Saturday of the month as an option too. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS Supriya Barrows asked if the Community Garden program would be listed on the endorsed program chart. Jenny Mott stated the City of Chino has a community garden and maybe we can speak with them about how they started their garden. Al Matta mentioned Sunset Park has a rubber mat under the playground equipment. He stated we would like to see more of this around the parks in Chino Hills. Gandara mentioned staff will be doing regular audits of the Chino Hills parks and will put notes about this park. Marggie Royston mentioned if any members have not got their t-shirts embroidered yet they can still do so by contacting her. Kurt Allan mentioned he liked the idea of one -day hike once a year and one -day hike on the first Saturday of every month. HEALTHY HILLS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING February 22, 2016 Page 4 Robert Gannon mentioned he would like to bring up the idea of having blood pressure screenings available at the Healthy Hills booth. Mott mentioned this could put the Committee and the City into liability if the reader reading the information read it incorrect. Gail Johnson asked if the Citizen Academy program was still meeting. Witte stated she was not sure since the program does not fall under Community Services. Witte mentioned she would follow up with City Manager's office. Jenny Mott mentioned the grant proposal for the Coalition for Tobacco Free was submitted. She stated next meeting she would have a follow up. Karen Haughey announced Supervisor Hagman's First Annual Happy Heart Fair on February 26 at the Westwind Community Center in the City of Ontario. Bill Taylor thanked staff for all the handouts and data provided. He mentioned it is helpful for the Committee members to review. Taylor mentioned if anyone would be interested in going to the Park and Recreation Commission it would be held on March 16 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. Chair Moran reminded Committee members about the FSA (Family Service Association) Senior Nutrition Program. She stated because this is at the Chino Senior Center, Chino Hills residents are still eligible. NEXT MEETING DATE The next Steering Committee meeting will be Monday, May 16, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Chino Hills Community Center Room A and B, 14250 Peyton Drive, Chino Hills.
