BACKGROUND/ANALYSIS: Since Metropolitan Water District's (MWD) first Solar Cup races in 2003 with eight high school teams, participation in the solar -powered boat competition has become extremely successful. Ayala High School will again be building and racing a solar -powered boat in the competition to be held May 15- 17, 2009 at Lake Skinner, near Temecula. Solar Cup is an opportunity for students to gain understanding in the following areas: Stewardship of natural resources, Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Awareness of water quality issues and water conservation, Alternative energy and fuel sources, and also Reservoir management. The solar -powered boats will compete in speed and endurance race events. Sponsorship fees are furnished directly to the schools, first -year schools will be provided $4,000.00 and previously participating schools will be provided $2,500.00. Ayala High School has been a faithful participant in the Solar Cup for several years. Sponsoring water agencies provide each team with money to equip their boats with drive trains, electrical systems, solar collection equipment and steering. Chino Hills is partnering with Inland Empire Utilities Agency to share 50/50 in the sponsorship of Ayala High School. MWD assumes the costs of several student workshops, the main events, administration and related expenses.
